Mark 3:31-35
The mother of Jesus and
his brothers arrived at the house; and standing outside, they sent to him and
called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother
and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.”
And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Wow, Jesus sounds ticked
in this Gospel from Mark, it’s not what we normally hear from him but obviously
there is a bee in his bonnet. His family ask to see him and he goes off “Who
are my mother and my brothers”, that some question but I think it’s not
directed at his mother Mary but at us….
Is Jesus saying who are
you to the people around him, and to us, are we people who could say I am a brother
to Jesus or not. Are we acting in a way that would reflect kinship with him or
are we just paying lip service to being Christians. Are we following what it
means to be a brother or sister of Jesus both on the surface and in our hearts
or is it just a name we borrow to get into a club.
I have lived in a world
where it was all about surface, all about appearance, all about false ID. I am
afraid to say I fell into the trap where I to was just saying yes, and not
really being a brother to our Lord, letting my own anger be the real choice
that I had made, thankfully God is a God of second chances and once again I
have my chance to answer the question “Who are you”.
I hope I can pick the
right person to be….
